First Signs of Fall

Living in a place where Autumn is fairly non-existent I have to rely on other signs of Fall, like receiving my Halloween edition of the Pottery Barn Kids catalog.

Flipping through those catalog pages takes me back to the four years I spent living in Virginia. Fall was my most favorite time — the weather is not too hot or cold but just right, and the tree-lined neighborhoods boast the most amazing shades of orange, red and yellow.

We moved to Phoenix soon after having our first child because we wanted to get back out West where we would have a little more wiggle room. This time of year, though, I secretly wish we had never moved, and I contemplate flying my family out to Alexandria, Virginia, to go Trick or Treating the right way. The charming colonial architecture, winding roads and gorgeous fall colors have a fairy-tale quality that on Halloween night is so spooky in an absolutely wonderful way.

Maybe someday we’ll make it out there, but this year I’ll have to settle for the catalog.

Loved your note! I too love the fall …. I suppose that’s why I got married in the fall .. the cool breeze, the beautiful colors and Halloween is also one of our favorite spooky spectacular holidays ! I can’t wait to dress up my 6 year old .. or shall I say she will be dressing her self up .. if she hasn’t changed her mind again .. first it was wonder woman, then tinker bell – I think the last character she said she’d be was ” Madeline ” – oh she has me laughing all the time. My almost 4 month old … were not sure what he will be but Morgan’s idea was something along the lines of a Super Baby with the letter S on his cape ! Okay – back to my chores and getting things done while my little one is napping and I can run around the house like a wild woman!

Just last week I commented to my husband that I couldn’t wait for that first morning where I walk outside and instead of feeling like I’m in a sauna there was that reminder that fall truly is coming. Well it happened! This last weekend the weather actually turned a bit cool! It’s coming! Hooray! We made it through another summer!

I’m right with you. I grew up in Michigan (you know, where there are seasons). I feel like I’m cheating my children out of “real” Halloween by not living in a seasonal climate.

Just head up North a bit to Utah. We have a wonderful fall. The nights are starting to get crisp and chilly and I fall asleep each night to the beautiful music of crickets. I love the wind in the leaves. I love fall and spring but could do without the harsh winter and blistering summer.
Halloween is fun, but a few times we had snow and most often it is cold. So you often see puffy, squishy fairies and spidermen because they have their winter coats and sweats on underneath their costumes.

But nothing is more beautiful than the mountains filled with beautiful changing leaves. It is a masterpiece.

My husband is in the military and we move every few years and sometimes more often. We have just recently moved back to the east coast from Texas. Now Texas was nice in that my annuals usually made it from season to season without any issues. But I so missed the fall, having grown up in MA. I have always enjoyed the seasons and fall is my favorite. I have explained to some which have never seen how the trees put on their fall colors, that fall in New England is a full sensory experience. Your eyes take in the beautiful colors from burnt umber, orange, and yellows, your nose smells the leaves- a sweet smell unlike anything one can imagine and you can hear the crunch under foot while taking your morning walk and lastly to put them into a pile and jump in and feel fall.
Yes, I do love the fall and my children now get to experience it too!

I’ve never lived near the northeast area of our beautiful country but I always loved the Fall season. The trees in northeast TX change color but it only last for a few weeks. I always long for the seasonal changes that come. By far my favorite holiday is Halloween, it even supersedes Christmas in my book. I still hope to one day experience a true FALL season. One day…one day…
