I’m enrolling Piper in a new pre-school this Fall, and her teacher recently asked me if Piper had much experience cutting with scissors. It seems most kids don’t get a lot of exposure to scissors in their pre-school days. Gee, I just can’t imagine why any mother wouldn’t want to give her child something sharp that cuts things? (wink!)
So for Worksheet Wednesday this week I decided to put together this Shooting Star cutting exercise. See if your little one can cut along the dotted line and make it to the star.
If you’re still leery of letting your child loose with scissors, check out these Amazing Kid Scissors from EK Success. The plastic blades cut just what they should (paper) and nothing they shouldn’t (hair).

My LO is too small (at 18 mos) for this one. But it reminded me of something – have you read No No, Yes Yes? We just got it and I was shocked at the hair cutting/paper cutting page. I think when we re-read it I may skip that page so as to not put any thoughts in his head.
I love your worksheet series. Perhaps I should print them and file them away for use in a few years.
Hi Renee, We’re so glad you’re enjoying the worksheets. Our kids are loving them too.
I used to teach PreK to 4 year olds and many would not know how to use scissors. Those who had been to the 3 year old program at our school were prepared (at least on how to hold the paper & scissors). I now stay at home with my daughter (who is now 4), but I do allow her to use scissors. It is for good motor skills, muscle strength, eye hand coordination, etc. I encourage others to allow their children, grandchildren, students, etc. to use scissors for age appropriate projects. It is a good teaching point on when to use & not to use scissors. If the child cannot use them the correct way (for cutting PAPER), the scissors are put away. Anyway, that’s my two cents. I have the NO, NO, YES, YES book and just reinforce the scissors rule. But I do understand why you would want to skip it.
I print out the worksheets from your website that are appropriate for her age & save the others on my computer.
Hi Amanda, Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us all!
