We found a new favorite to add to our list of best Halloween children’s books. I’m Not Afraid of This Haunted House by Laurie Friedman is filled with all sorts of gruesome delights!
Simon Lester Henry Strauss bravely leads a group of his friends through one very spooky house, but nothing — not blood-sucking vampires or spider-eating goblins — can scare him.
Clearly he’s one brave guy… except for the “scary” surprise at the end. I won’t spoil it for you — to see what finally sends Simon running get the book.
My four year old is still a bit sheepish when it comes to anything scary; yet she loves this book. The illustrations albeit spooky have a funny quality that makes them easier for youngsters to handle. About every other page repeats the phrase: “I’m Simon Lester Henry Strauss and I’m not afraid of this haunted house.” This repetition is somehow reassuring to kids who might otherwise think it is too scary. I even think Simon’s brave spirit is rubbing off on Piper.
Another big plus is that Attalie, who is still a pretty early reader, can read it almost entirely without help (the repeating comes in handy for that too!) We’ve been reading this book almost daily, and I think I’m actually going to miss it once Halloween is over!
A couple other fun Halloween reads we’ve been loving: Little Goblins Ten by Pamela Jane and The 13 Nights of Halloween by Guy Vasilovich.

What a cute book. We (I) love the Jerry Seinfeld Halloween book. Reminds me of when I was a kid bundling up to go out to get candy.
